Every bride knows that preparing and planning a wedding is truly expensive. From the invitations to the reception, every detail has a corresponding price attached to it. If you are a bride and you have done some baking before, you may want to consider baking and icing your very own wedding cake. Aside from the fact that you get to enjoy this fun hobby, you can save a lot of money as well. On top of it all, you get some bragging rights by telling that you have personally made your own cake.

If you already know the basics of baking, here are some additional tips that will help you prepare the cake of your dreams.

-As with the saying, ‘begin with the end in mind’, the style, structure and icing materials of your cake should be considered if you know that the cake will have to be transported to the reception venue. Consider the length of the travel and the car you will use to transport it.

-For cake toppers, you can ask your florist to assist you in placing real flowers instead. Icing flowers are much more complicated to make and they may ‘wither’ during transport if not handled ‘professionally’. You can stick the floral topper on the top of the cake which ideally is made of plastic or Styrofoam.

-Stick to a simple cake design. Make your expectations realistic and a wedding cake with too many designs may look too busy and a little slip on the design may make it really noticeable. Get one where flaws will be concealed and where slips can easily be remedied.

-Depending on the bride’s gown, the ingredients of the icing will be indicative of the finished products color. Buttercream, when used as icing, will match an off-white wedding gown. Ivory fondant will have the same effect as well. Use pure white icing if the bride’s dress is pure white. As much as possible, have the icing color the same as your wedding gown.

What is most important is that you get to experience baking your very own wedding cake. It is normal and quite expected for the bride to purchase her own wedding cake but to make one yourself is truly admirable. Literally, you are ‘hands-on’ in your own wedding preparations.

On your wedding day, you can look at your wedding cake and say to yourself that this has been the most delicious and most romantic cake you have baked so far. Maybe it really is the effort that can make your wedding cake truly special. Employ other people’s help as well, such as for transporting it to the venue, or incorporating their suggestions as you make the cake for the most memorable day of your life.  Criss White
